Includes Lunch & Gelato Experience the story of Little Italy – a thriving, contemporary neighborhood in the heart of downtown San Diego that has had an Italian presence since 1871. Six thousand families of Genovese and Sicilian origin once called this neighborhood home. The salty sea air, the ready-made port, the date palms, bougainvillea, geraniums, olive trees and cactus plants reminded many Italians of their sunny fishing villages back home. They painted their tiny wooden bungalow homes the colors favored by their ancestors. Upon our arrival to this quaint neighborhood, our charming and knowledgeable Little Italy guide welcomes us, and with his delightful narration, begins his re-creation of the world that was once here, and showcases the hip and stylish neighborhood that Little Italy has become. You are in for a real treat at an Italian restaurant that boasts authentic Sicilian cuisine with modern flair and you will enjoy watching a chef prepare two classic Sicilian entrees “from antiquity” before you. Then indulge in this wonderful included meal that has been prepared especially for you. Later, enjoy your choice of hand-crafted gelato at a local landmark. On a guided walking tour you will discover hidden neighborhood landmarks that chart the neighborhood’s story through time – a beautiful church with stunning artwork and stained glass, historic homes from the 19th century, Prohibition alley, an Italian grocery store built in the 1920’s and much more! Enjoy time at leisure for browsing the food emporiums and European boutiques here. Suggested: Comfortable walking shoes as there is considerable walking on this tour.   Includes Lunch & Tastings Today we are joined by professional step-on guide Curt, who is a history buff with an expertise on the evolution of L.A., and is especially loved by our clients for his charismatic personality and fun stories. This new adventure explores the culture and history of the diverse Asian communities of Los Angeles, with a chance to taste sweet and savory foods from Chinatown, Koreatown and Little Tokyo. First, we will visit the Chinese American Museum, that is symbolically housed in the oldest and last surviving structure of L.A.’s original Chinatown, and is the first such museum in Southern California dedicated to the Chinese American experience and history in this region. As we drive through Chinatown, see the bright and festive colors that adorn its shops and buildings, and enjoy an authentic Chinese pastry. Koreatown is a sprawling community that has become one of the city’s hippest areas thanks to the continuing renovation of its rich architectural heritage. With the influence of three generations of Korean immigrants, these once-mean streets have become picturesque and prosperous with an “East Meets West” sense of fun. The phrase "Korean BBQ" was made up by Koreans restaurant owners who live here in the U.S. as a way to advertise an “American” staple with a “Korean influence.” Today you will get to indulge in an included lunch at a Korean BBQ-style restaurant- the sizzle and smoke of this tabletop cuisine is one of the definitive features of the L.A. dining scene. Enjoy a choice of beef, pork, or chicken, cooked over an open fire on a small grill at your table. It is fresh, hot and delicious! After lunch, we will visit the Korean Cultural Center to experience the rich traditions and history of Korea that boasts contemporary artifacts as well as a variety of replicas of historical pieces from Korea's dynastic kingdoms. Beyond the colorful Fire Tower and Buddhist Temples of Little Tokyo is a major historic, cultural and vibrant Asian enclave, with its roots dating back into the 1880s. Every day, Little Tokyo bustles with activity and authenticity, from the steaming platters of hand-stretched noodles to the stylish restaurants and stores that represent Japanese heritage. Curt will lead us on a short guided walking tour of Little Tokyo, and here you will get to try the “World’s Best Cream Puffs” from a popular bakery chain that originated in Japan. All visits subject to change. Click here for important trip information.
